Goals of Jennie Stuart Health Nurse Extern Program

  • Provide prelicensure nursing students an opportunity to gain additional experience to enhance their preparation as a future licensed nurse under the supervision of experienced registered nurse in the healthcare setting.
  • Provide and support prelicensure nursing students experiences in the most realistic setting possible following legal and safety restrictions for purposes of patient safety and professionalism by:
    • Strengthening assessment and clinical skills
    • Developing communication, time management, and critical thinking skills
    • Expanding knowledge of the professional nurses role
    • Building confidence in applying the skills they have learned in the academic environment
  • Encourage retention of nursing graduates through provision of supplemental practice experience with the workplace.
Nurse Extern Eligibility

  • Candidate must be currently enrolled in an approved school of nursing program within the United States preparing candidates for registered nursing licensure.
  • Successfully completed, at a minimum, the second semester of nursing school.
  • Candidates must be in good standing of the school of nursing with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
  • Current BLS certification. AHA or American Red Cross HealthCare Provider.
Nurse Extern Requirements

  • Candidate must be willing to work 36-40 hours a week during the 10-week summer program.
